Torrisdale Castle Estate: A Historic Gem Embracing Sustainable Tourism
Tucked away on the eastern coast of the Kintyre Peninsula, Torrisdale Castle Estate is a breathtaking retreat in Western Scotland. The estate is home to the 19th-century Castle, which has been in the Macalister Hall family for five generations since around 1870.
From Family Home to Luxury Retreat
In the 1980s, the estate evolved into a self-catering destination, offering a range of cottages and eco-friendly bothies. Since taking over in 2013, Niall and Emma have expanded the estate’s offerings, blending heritage with modern sustainability.
A Commitment to Green Energy
Sustainability is at the heart of the Estate. The family has implemented several eco-friendly initiatives, including:
- A biomass boiler, heating the castle and surrounding properties using estate-sourced wood.
- A hydroelectric scheme, generating clean energy for both the estate and the national grid.
- Powering the Beinn an Tuirc Distillery, Kintyre’s only small-batch craft distillery, which operates in a renovated farm building on the estate.
The distillery is a family collaboration between Niall, Emma, and Niall’s brother Kenny, further reinforcing their dedication to sustainability and innovation.
Introducing a New Multi-Purpose Dome
With such a rich history and environmental focus, we were thrilled when Niall and Emma approached us about installing a 10m TruDomes geodome on the estate.
This stunning dome will serve as a versatile event space, offering:
- Spacious, light-filled interiors with excellent acoustics.
- A cosy, year-round venue, enhanced by a log burner.
- A scenic location next to the distillery and café.

Our geodesic dome will provide a flexible setting for weddings, music concerts, yoga retreats, and more. Its combination of natural beauty, history, and sustainability makes it the perfect addition to Torrisdale Castle Estate’s growing list of offerings.
