TruDomes chosen for events space on spectacular estate

TruDomes’ geodomes have been used in some spectacular settings over the years, from stunning National Parks and wild, rugged coastal locations to arctic ice lakes in Sweden and the red desert of Utah.

We’ve now added another to this growing list with the installation of one of our 10m domes at the Torrisdale Castle Estate in western Scotland. Situated on the east coast of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll, the estate is home to the 19th century Torrisdale Castle, a historic mansion residence which has been in the Macalister Hall family for five generations, since around 1870.

The castle is footsteps from a private sandy beach, with sensational panoramic views of Torrisdale Bay. In the early eighties, Mary and Donald Macalister Hall successfully diversified into a self-catering business. Providing a range of cottages and eco bothies, it is still thriving today in the hands of their son Niall and his wife Emma, who have further diversified the estate since taking over in 2013.

The family has shown a firm commitment to sustainability with the recent introduction of a biomass boiler which heats the castle and neighbouring properties using wood felled on the estate. A hydroelectric scheme has been built to generate power which is sold on to the grid. The scheme also powers the Beinn an Tuirc Distillery, Kintyre’s only small batch, craft distillery, located in an old farm building on the estate. The distillery was the brainchild of Niall, Emma and Niall’s brother Kenny.

TruDomes played a part in Niall’s next innovation when he decided to add events space to the estate’s offering. Our geodomes are ideal for that purpose. A spacious and airy, with excellent acoustics and an abundance of natural light, they are used to enhance the experience for a wide range of events, from weddings and conferences to yoga classes, festivals, theatre and live music. Niall and Emma found the perfect spot for their dome, perched next to the distillery and cafe.  They will soon be fitting a log burner to make the dome a comfortable and welcoming space in winter.

Niall said: “We will use the dome for wellness events like Pilates, yoga and sound baths, and for pop-up dining in conjunction with the café. We’ll also provide it for parties and weddings, so it’s truly multi-functional.  When looking for domes, we shopped around a bit. The reviews, quality and price were all factors in choosing TruDomes. The dome was relatively easy to install, though Kenny Ralston, our Estate Foreman, may disagree! We did it all in-house using the instructions TruDomes supplied – the process was slow but straight forward.”

With energy-efficient performance and 100% recyclable components, our domes are designed to serve the sustainability objectives that form an important part of the estate’s philosophy. Niall recognised that benefit and was equally impressed with TruDomes’ approach to customer care.

Niall said: “As a climate-positive business we certainly look for suppliers with environmental credentials like TruDomes. Their support has been excellent, both before and after the sale.  The team is very helpful, easy to deal with and there’s always someone available to chat to if you need advice.”

TruDomes are proud to see one of our domes become part of the immersive experience at this amazing location. Breathtaking scenery, craft gin and a market-leading geodome – what’s not to love!
