Case Study: Frowen Fields, Wales

Building a Life Less Ordinary

When Helen and Ashley left Berkshire for the rolling hills of Carmarthenshire, they weren’t setting out to build a glamping business. They simply wanted a different way of life – one surrounded by nature, animals and open countryside. Somewhere they could welcome guests looking to escape the pace of modern life and reconnect with what really matters.

What began as a single field for campers has since evolved into Frowen Fields Eco Glamping & Camping, an authentic off-grid retreat where two British-made TruDomes sit at the heart of the experience. Today, guests travel from across the UK to switch off, slow down and discover a simpler way of living.

From Fresh Start to Flourishing Retreat

Moving to West Wales marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter. The plan was modest: raise animals, enjoy a quieter lifestyle and offer a small camping experience for like-minded visitors.

As Helen explains: “We moved from Berkshire to Carmarthenshire to start a new life. We bought some land, raised animals and let people come and holiday on our grass. I thought I’d get lonely otherwise!

The turning point came during a visit to The Glamping Show. Although the couple had originally considered much smaller accommodation, one structure immediately stood out.

Then we found the dome. They were massive, had incredible views, looked beautiful and, most importantly, they were British. It just ticked every box.

Inspired by what they had seen, Helen and Ashley invested in their first 6m TruDomes dome. Working together, they assembled it themselves and welcomed their first guests in time for the summer of 2020.

That first dome changed everything. Rather than simply adding another accommodation option, it reshaped the direction of the business.

Today, the 6m Humble dome, nestled beside its own stream, offers complete privacy, while Preseli View, a larger 7m dome overlooking the Welsh countryside, provides panoramic views from the heart of the campsite. Together they allow Frowen Fields to welcome couples, families and nature lovers seeking a genuine off-grid escape.

Rediscovering the Joy of Switching Off

While many glamping businesses continue adding more technology and luxury features, Frowen Fields has remained true to its original vision.

The site operates primarily on solar power, with gas-powered facilities and thoughtfully designed communal spaces that encourage guests to spend time outdoors rather than in front of a screen. Evenings are spent around the fire, wildlife replaces background noise and some of the darkest skies in Wales provide unforgettable stargazing.

For Helen, that’s exactly what makes the experience so special: “People these days are so far removed from nature that they almost need reminding how to unwind.

It’s a philosophy that resonates with guests. Many arrive feeling exhausted but leave having rediscovered the simple pleasure of slowing down, listening to the stream, reading a book or simply sitting quietly. At Frowen Fields, luxury isn’t measured by technology – it’s measured by peace, space and connection.

Built to Last

As the business grew, Helen and Ashley knew they wanted a second dome. Rather than purchasing a brand-new structure, they invested in a pre-owned TruDomes that had previously operated at another glamping site. For them, it was a powerful demonstration of the quality and longevity of British engineering.

The fact that our second dome had already been operating somewhere else, came down, moved across the country and is now still providing holidays says everything about the quality.

Their confidence has only grown over the years. Living in rural West Wales means experiencing everything the British weather has to offer, yet both domes have continued to perform season after season.

They have also enjoyed watching TruDomes evolve, introducing practical features such as entrance porches and solar-powered ventilation in response to customer feedback. It’s an approach that has reinforced their belief they chose a manufacturer committed to continual improvement rather than standing still.

Just as importantly, the support has continued long after the initial purchase. Whether providing technical advice, marketing support or assistance when needed, Helen and Ashley say the relationship with TruDomes has always felt like a partnership rather than a transaction.

More Than Somewhere To Stay

Ask Helen what makes Frowen Fields special and the answer isn’t the domes themselves – it’s how guests feel while they’re there. Shaped by their own family experiences, Helen and Ashley have created a welcoming, inclusive retreat where every guest is encouraged to relax in their own way. It’s a place where children can explore, families can reconnect and the pace of everyday life fades into the background.

One moment, in particular, has stayed with Helen ever since: “A little girl staying with us kept saying she wanted to go home. I thought she meant her house, but she meant the dome. She’d started calling it home.

Stories like that explain why so many guests return year after year, often booking their next stay before they’ve even left. For Helen and Ashley, creating a place where people feel comfortable, connected and completely at ease has become every bit as important as the accommodation itself.

Proudly British

Choosing TruDomes was never simply about buying accommodation. It was about investing in British craftsmanship, supporting UK manufacturing and building a business around products they genuinely believe in. Their latest rebrand even incorporates the distinctive shape of a dome into the Frowen Fields logo, reflecting just how central TruDomes has become to the business.

As Helen puts it: “We’re proud to say ours are British-made TruDomes. It’s a bit like buying from Tesco or buying from Harrods. You can see and feel the quality.

That confidence has made Helen and Ashley passionate advocates for the brand, regularly recommending TruDomes to others considering starting their own glamping journey.

Looking Ahead

Today, Frowen Fields is everything Helen and Ashley hoped it would become. Planning permission has been secured, repeat bookings continue to grow and guests travel from across the UK to experience a place where life moves at a gentler pace.

Their advice to anyone considering a glamping business is simple: stay true to your vision. Every site is different and that’s exactly what makes TruDomes so versatile.

What started as a dream of a quieter life has grown into a thriving off-grid retreat built on sustainability, British craftsmanship and unforgettable guest experiences. At the heart of it all are two TruDomes – not simply providing accommodation but helping create a place where guests can disconnect from everyday life, reconnect with nature and, if only for a few days, feel completely at home.
