The Many Faces Of The Geodesic Dome

Posted on 27 April 2022

The Geodesic Dome is a relatively new concept in the hospitality and events sphere, however, without a doubt domes are taking the world by storm and are becoming more and more popular. TruDomes manufacture geodesic domes in the UK, in the heart of England, and have been manufacturing for over 30 years now.

History of the dome

Let’s take a step back in time, all the way back to the late 1940s, when the first dome was created by an American engineer and architect, Richard Buckminster Fuller. ‘Bucky’, as he was called, created a sphere-like structure that consisted of a network of triangles, providing a balanced, structural framework with minimal materials.

Although Bucky was a pioneer of the geodesic dome, he wasn’t in fact the first to give it a go. The very first geodesic dome was designed after WW1 by a man named Walther Bauersfeld who was a chief engineer of the Carl Zeiss optical academy, for a planetarium to house his planetarium project. The dome was constructed in Germany and a later, larger dome was opened to the public in 1926 called ‘The Wonder of Jenna’.

Domes are held strong by their metal structured rods that form a complex arrangement of struts to sustain the model. TruDomes use aircraft grade aluminium struts where possible, to ensure that the material is both durable and weatherproof from the elements long term.

Modern day dome

Today, domes have been populated all over the world and are used for many reasons, from glamping homes to event venues, unique dining spaces, educational spaces and more! They are arguably the most versatile form of outdoor accommodation on the market and they are loved for their eye-catching, futuristic appearance.

TruDomes manufactures various different size domes, which can make things a little confusing when it comes to investing in a dome, whether that is for business or personal uses. Since you now know about the geodesic dome and where it came from, we’ve put together a handy guide to point you in the right direction.

TruDomes dome sizes and uses

Let’s start with the smallest first – our NEW and exciting 4.4m dome. This little dome shouldn’t be underestimated as it boasts 12.92 square metres of space; it has many uses and is surprisingly spacious! First of all, our Compact Dome is a super addition to our glamping dome range – it is a perfect, cosy space for couples and with a competitive price point too, it’s a brilliant choice for someone looking to invest in a few glamping domes to boost business revenue this Summer.

The 4.4m dome also makes a wonderful dining dome, with space to seat up to 10 people comfortably at a table. Again, if you are a pub or restaurant looking to expand your offering, this is a great option for you!

Our 4.4m dome is also the design used for our ‘Care Dome’, a new concept that we hope will allow care patients and relatives to visit and converse with ease, in a space that feels secure and safe.

Moving on from the 4.4m dome, we offer a huge range of sizes going up from our 5.7m dome, to a whopping 18m dome! Our 4.4m, 5.7m and 6.8m geodomes are all great choices for glamping and dining events, depending on how many people you plan to host and how big a space you have. You can always chat to our TruDomes team about which one is for you! The great thing about this range of domes, is that they are self assembly, meaning that you can put it up and take it down as you wish. It goes without saying that the smaller the dome the easier it is to assemble, the current record for the 4.4m dome is 45 mins with one person but we are happy to be challenged!

Any domes over 10m in size may require our team to assemble the dome for you; the larger domes require an expert hand! The larger domes range from 10m, 12m to 18m, and beyond and are perfect for events and larger dining occasions!

Hopefully you have a good idea now of what the famous geodome is all about and which dome is the right dome for you – if you’re still unsure, our friendly team of dome-experts are always happy to discuss your options.
