"The contrasting geodesic structure set in the beautiful Welsh countryside works so well"
Cae Nant Glamping in Wales: A Dream Turned Reality with TruDomes
Launching a business during a global pandemic is no small feat, but for Gareth and Charlie, it was the perfect time to turn their dream into reality. In July 2021, they opened Cae Nant Glamping in Wales, a luxury retreat nestled in the picturesque Welshpool countryside.
Thanks to the success of their TruDomes glamping accommodations, they are now looking to expand from two to four domes. As they explore options at The Glamping Show this year (September 16-18), we caught up with them to learn about their journey so far.
Choosing Glamping Domes: A Natural Fit
TruDomes: Did you always plan on using glamping domes, or did you consider other types of accommodation?
Cae Nant: We opened our first dome, ‘Cadair Idris,’ in early July 2021, followed by ‘Cadair Berwyn’ later that month. While we explored different options, we ultimately circled back to domes. Their unique structure, aesthetics, and versatility made them the best choice for our site.
How TruDomes Fit the Landscape
TruDomes: Our motto is “Create space anywhere.” How does this resonate with you?
Cae Nant: It’s spot on! We positioned our domes on elevated platforms to maximize the stunning countryside views. The geodesic structure is both modern and striking against the natural landscape—like exposed beams in a renovated home. Inside, the panoramic window frames the breathtaking scenery, offering an immersive experience in nature.
Our remote location provides a tranquil escape, with a single-track road leading to Glyndŵr’s Way. Guests enjoy incredible stargazing, abundant wildlife, and a nearby babbling brook—perfect for little explorers while adults unwind.
Designing the Ultimate Glamping Experience
TruDomes: The interiors look luxurious and inviting. What inspired the design?
Cae Nant: We aimed for a cozy, high-end feel with thoughtful touches. One dome features a green theme, complemented by matching Elfin kitchens. Each dome includes a kettle, toaster, microwave, hob, fridge-freezer, and a Nespresso machine—we’re big coffee lovers!
We positioned the master bed to offer a direct view through the panoramic window, allowing guests to wake up to nature’s beauty. To enhance comfort, we added rugs, fleece blankets, and ambient lighting, including fairy lights spiraling up to the stargazing window. Outside, deck lighting and solar lanterns create a magical nighttime ambiance.
Overcoming Challenges to Build a Dream Business
TruDomes: What challenges did you face in starting Cae Nant Glamping?
Cae Nant: The idea took root six years ago when we bought our cottage with 10 acres of land. After extensive house renovations, we shifted focus to glamping. Navigating planning applications, ecology regulations (to protect our resident dormice!), and the pandemic delayed our timeline, but we persevered.
We handled everything ourselves—from groundwork and dome construction to website creation and marketing—while balancing full-time jobs and family life. Our daughters, Joss (12) and Ellie (9), have been amazing throughout, even helping with changeovers!
Seeing guests enjoy the space, reading their glowing reviews, and receiving rebookings—especially over New Year—makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Marketing & Booking Success
TruDomes: How did you attract your first guests?
Cae Nant: We partnered with Cool Camping and Glampingly, which led to a feature in the Evening Standard as a ‘Top Glamping Site with Availability.’ Social media, especially Facebook groups like Holiday Lets in Wales, has been crucial. Word-of-mouth and recommendations from happy guests have also driven bookings.
To streamline guest experiences, we use the ‘Touch Stay’ app, which provides a digital guide with everything from check-in details to local recommendations. This has been a game-changer for both us and our visitors.
Looking Ahead: Growth & Expansion
TruDomes: What’s next for Cae Nant Glamping?
Cae Nant: We have approval for six units but are considering expanding to four, ensuring guests have plenty of space. We’re also exploring smaller, seasonal units for the lower field. The Glamping Show will be a great opportunity to gather new ideas!
One thing is certain—we love our domes and will definitely be adding more.
Why Guests Love Cae Nant Glamping in Wales
TruDomes: What do guests love most about staying in your domes?
Cae Nant: The feedback has been fantastic! Guests appreciate the attention to detail—everything from dog towels to fly swatters. Cleanliness is a top priority, and our welcome basket (homemade brownies, marshmallows, fizz, and fresh farm eggs) has been a big hit.
Our wood-fired hot tubs and hammock area offer ultimate relaxation, while the optional pizza oven hire is a guest favorite. Many book it after seeing others enjoy it, and one guest even rebooked it for the end of their stay!
Advice for Aspiring Glamping Owners
TruDomes: What advice would you give to those looking to start their own glamping business?
Cae Nant: Do your research and invest in quality. Guests expect high standards, so don’t cut corners. Also, don’t assume everyone knows how to light a fire—providing guidance for wood burners and hot tubs is essential!
Leverage technology for marketing and operations. A strong online presence and social media strategy make a huge difference.
The Meaning Behind Our Slogan: “We Don’t Have Five Stars, We Have a Billion”
TruDomes: Your slogan is fantastic! How did you come up with it?
Cae Nant: We brainstormed around the kitchen table, wanting something unique. Our night skies are breathtaking—on clear nights, you can see the Milky Way. We tell our girls it’s “the stars between the stars.” So instead of five stars, we offer a billion! The domes’ stargazing windows allow guests to drift off under this incredible natural display.
